FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Unsure about how we work? We have gathered the most common questions for your convenience.
It can suit both. Some clients use it for a single social media giveaway, while others need help with a larger campaign involving multiple entry steps, prize conditions or promotional channels. The key question is whether your promotion has enough moving parts to create legal risk if the wording or mechanics are unclear. If your campaign includes eligibility rules, prize limitations, pricing messages, refund issues or customer data collection, a legal review can be worthwhile before launch.
Common issues include entry terms that do not match the actual campaign, vague prize descriptions, overstated advertising, unclear closing dates, and refund or substitution wording that leaves too much open to interpretation. Problems also arise when the published promotion mechanics differ from what the business intends to do in practice. Promotion rules may depend on the mechanics and location of the competition, so even a simple giveaway can raise questions if the campaign runs across different channels or regions.
The service can include reviewing or preparing promotion terms, checking advertising and pricing statements, assessing prize and eligibility wording, and identifying fair trading or consumer law risk points tied to the campaign. We look at whether the terms reflect the actual promotion mechanics and prize structure, because that is often where issues start. If your campaign also involves collecting entrant information, we may flag privacy-related points, since the legal position depends on how your business handles information in practice.
We can flag whether permit or approval questions are likely to arise, but the fixed-fee does not include preparing or lodging permit applications. That matters because permit requirements can vary depending on where and how the promotion runs, including the campaign format and prize setup. If your promotion appears to need further regulator-facing work, we can explain the issue and outline the next legal step. This service is better suited to the campaign review and drafting side than to managing external application processes.
Useful starting materials include your draft terms, ad copy, landing page text, social posts, prize details, entry method, eligibility criteria and any internal notes on how winners will be selected or contacted. If refunds, substitutions or cancellations could arise, include those planned rules too. The more closely the documents match the promotion you actually intend to run, the more precise the review can be. If you only have a rough concept, we can still help identify what needs to be documented before launch.

We operate completely online, which means we can help you wherever you are in New Zealand. We have office spaces in Sydney, and in Melbourne, but our use of technology allows our team members to work remotely from around the world. Our legal team are mostly based in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. We also have a London office for Sprintlaw UK.
Our legal team is made up of experienced lawyers, who are specialists in various areas of law and hold an Australian legal practising certificate. None of our Sprintlaw lawyers are New Zealand qualified lawyers and they do not currently hold a New Zealand practising certificate.
They provide legal services working remotely from Australia via our 'legal consultancy' model, through which (under section 6 and section 35 of the New Zealand Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006) our Australian legal team are permitted to provide legal services to New Zealand businesses provided they do not provide services in certain 'reserved' areas of law. You can read our FAQ page to learn a bit more about our 'legal consultancy' model.
Given the strong similarities between Australian and New Zealand law, and the areas of law in which we practice (being small business and startup law), we do not view the fact that our lawyers have not qualified in New Zealand as having any substantive impact on the quality of our service. We are committed to ensuring that we provide high quality, affordable legal services to all our New Zealand clients.
Our legal team have all trained at leading firms, but have left the traditional corporate law world to join us on our mission to create a new and better way of delivering legal services. They have specialist expertise in technology law, intellectual property law, contract drafting and review, corporate law and commercial law.
