Unsure about how we work? We have gathered the most common questions for your convenience.
This review is commonly used by businesses that charge customers on a recurring basis, including memberships, software subscriptions, meal or product deliveries, online communities, and service plans with automatic renewal. It is especially useful where customers sign up online, introductory offers are used, or cancellation is handled through an account portal rather than manually. If your business relies on recurring billing, renewal notices, discount campaigns, or trial-to-paid conversion, a review can help identify whether the customer journey creates legal risk beyond the wording of the terms alone.
The recurring problems are often about customer impression rather than one isolated clause. Common issues include unclear renewal wording, cancellation paths that are harder than sign-up, pricing that changes after an introductory period, refund statements that are too broad, and promotions that do not match the actual offer mechanics. We also look at how information is presented at checkout and in follow-up communications. Where customer data is involved, the right drafting and advice depend on For Subscription Compliance Review, the wording should follow your real information flows. For Subscription Compliance Review, collection points and disclosure practices shape the drafting. information in practice.
We review the materials and flows you provide within the agreed scope, usually including subscription terms, sign-up pages, checkout wording, renewal and cancellation process descriptions, refund settings, and relevant promotional material. The aim is to assess the subscription model as a whole rather than treating each item in isolation. You receive written feedback identifying key legal risk areas, where wording or process may need adjustment, and what next steps are worth prioritising. Marketing strategy, technical implementation and security remediation are outside this fixed-fee.
We can identify risk areas, explain where your current setup may be vulnerable, and recommend practical changes, but we cannot promise that any business is compliant in every scenario. Subscription models often change over time through new offers, revised billing logic, updated cancellation tools, or campaign-specific promotions. You receive practical guidance on the issues in scope, while any broader risk position depends on your documents, conduct and implementation. That is one reason we review both the documents and the real customer journey, not just a single set of terms in isolation.
Sometimes they can, particularly where a subscription campaign includes a competition, giveaway, prize mechanic, or location-specific promotion rules. Permit requirements can vary depending on where and how the promotion runs, and the legal position may also depend on the exact promotion mechanics and prize structure. As part of the review, we can flag where a promotion appears to raise an extra issue or may need separate attention. Obtaining permits, dealing with third parties, or managing any application process is not included in this service.

We operate completely online, which means we can help you wherever you are in New Zealand. We have office spaces in Sydney, and in Melbourne, but our use of technology allows our team members to work remotely from around the world. Our legal team are mostly based in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. We also have a London office for Sprintlaw UK.
Our legal team is made up of experienced lawyers, who are specialists in various areas of law and hold an Australian legal practising certificate. None of our Sprintlaw lawyers are New Zealand qualified lawyers and they do not currently hold a New Zealand practising certificate.
They provide legal services working remotely from Australia via our 'legal consultancy' model, through which (under section 6 and section 35 of the New Zealand Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006) our Australian legal team are permitted to provide legal services to New Zealand businesses provided they do not provide services in certain 'reserved' areas of law. You can read our FAQ page to learn a bit more about our 'legal consultancy' model.
Given the strong similarities between Australian and New Zealand law, and the areas of law in which we practice (being small business and startup law), we do not view the fact that our lawyers have not qualified in New Zealand as having any substantive impact on the quality of our service. We are committed to ensuring that we provide high quality, affordable legal services to all our New Zealand clients.
Our legal team have all trained at leading firms, but have left the traditional corporate law world to join us on our mission to create a new and better way of delivering legal services. They have specialist expertise in technology law, intellectual property law, contract drafting and review, corporate law and commercial law.
