Frequently asked questions
Unsure about how we work? We have gathered the most common questions for your convenience.
This is commonly useful for businesses that send regular promotional emails, run automated nurture sequences, collect subscribers through website forms, or manage campaigns for clients. It can also help where a business has grown quickly and its signup language, consent records or unsubscribe process has not been legally reviewed for some time. Agencies, online retailers, service businesses and creators often use this service when they want a clearer view of whether their campaign setup, not just the copy itself, is creating avoidable legal exposure.
Common issues include unclear consent wording, pre-ticked or bundled permissions, weak record-keeping around how a subscriber joined the list, unsubscribe links that are hard to use, and campaign copy that does not sit comfortably with the way personal information is actually handled. We also look at whether the materials reviewed create a mismatch between public-facing statements and internal practice. How you collect, use and disclose information will shape both the drafting and the advice, so process details matter as much as the email wording.
The service includes a legal review of the email marketing materials and processes you provide within the agreed scope. That usually means campaign templates, signup language, consent wording and unsubscribe steps. You receive written feedback on the main legal risk areas we identify, along with practical recommendations for changes. A follow-up discussion is included so you can ask questions about the findings. The fixed-fee does not include technical implementation inside your marketing platform, security remediation, or ongoing representation if a complaint or regulator issue later arises.
Yes, we can review the campaign content and process information you provide, even if you send through a third-party platform. In practice, the legal issues often sit in the signup flow, list management settings, consent records and unsubscribe journey rather than the software brand itself. We are not reconfiguring the platform for you as part of this service, but we can identify where the current setup appears to create legal risk and what changes may be worth making with your internal team or marketing provider.
No legal review can honestly promise that. The fixed-fee work is intended to improve clarity and reduce avoidable gaps, not to replace broader operational compliance work. Email marketing risk depends on the facts, including how contacts were collected, what permissions were obtained, how lists are maintained, and whether your actual sending practices match the wording shown to subscribers. A review can identify problem areas in the materials and processes we assess, but it is not the same as ongoing monitoring of every campaign, workflow and staff action over time.

We operate completely online, which means we can help you wherever you are in New Zealand. We have office spaces in Sydney, and in Melbourne, but our use of technology allows our team members to work remotely from around the world. Our legal team are mostly based in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. We also have a London office for Sprintlaw UK.
Our legal team is made up of experienced lawyers, who are specialists in various areas of law and hold an Australian legal practising certificate. None of our Sprintlaw lawyers are New Zealand qualified lawyers and they do not currently hold a New Zealand practising certificate.
They provide legal services working remotely from Australia via our 'legal consultancy' model, through which (under section 6 and section 35 of the New Zealand Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006) our Australian legal team are permitted to provide legal services to New Zealand businesses provided they do not provide services in certain 'reserved' areas of law. You can read our FAQ page to learn a bit more about our 'legal consultancy' model.
Given the strong similarities between Australian and New Zealand law, and the areas of law in which we practice (being small business and startup law), we do not view the fact that our lawyers have not qualified in New Zealand as having any substantive impact on the quality of our service. We are committed to ensuring that we provide high quality, affordable legal services to all our New Zealand clients.
Our legal team have all trained at leading firms, but have left the traditional corporate law world to join us on our mission to create a new and better way of delivering legal services. They have specialist expertise in technology law, intellectual property law, contract drafting and review, corporate law and commercial law.
