Frequently asked questions
Unsure about how we work? We have gathered the most common questions for your convenience.
The review centres on the objections raised by IPONZ in your examination report and how those objections affect your application. That can include issues such as similarity concerns, descriptiveness, specification problems, or other examination points identified in the report. You will receive advice that explains what the objections mean in practical terms, how strong the issues appear based on the material provided, and what response paths may be available. This service gives you advice on the report itself, rather than preparing and filing the response for you.
It is commonly used by business owners, founders, marketing teams, and applicants who have filed a trade mark application and then received an adverse report they were not expecting. It is especially useful where you want to know whether the objections look manageable, whether changes to the application may be needed, or whether it may be better to reconsider the filing strategy. If you are comparing options before spending more on formal response work, this one-off advice service can help clarify that decision.
Broader work may be needed if the adverse report raises complex objections, if evidence needs to be assembled, or if a formal response requires detailed submissions. You may also need more support where the report points to conflicts with earlier marks or where the wording of your application needs careful amendment. This page is intentionally narrower than a broader opposition or response matter. It is for advice on the report and options, not end-to-end handling of the process with IPONZ.
Yes. Many applicants use this service at that exact decision point. A lawyer can assess the report and explain whether the objections appear to be the kind that may be addressed through argument, amendment, or further evidence, or whether the application may face more significant difficulty. That does not mean any result can be promised, but it does give you a more grounded basis for deciding whether to invest in a formal response, change course, or seek broader trade mark support.
After the advice is delivered, you should have a clearer view of the objections, the commercial significance of those issues, and the likely next step worth considering. In some matters, that may mean preparing a formal response. In others, it may mean narrowing goods or services, gathering further material, or reassessing the application strategy. If you want Sprintlaw NZ to assist beyond the one-off advice, we can outline what additional work would involve, but that follow-on work is not included in this fixed-fee.

We operate completely online, which means we can help you wherever you are in New Zealand. We have office spaces in Sydney, and in Melbourne, but our use of technology allows our team members to work remotely from around the world. Our legal team are mostly based in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. We also have a London office for Sprintlaw UK.
Our legal team is made up of experienced lawyers, who are specialists in various areas of law and hold an Australian legal practising certificate. None of our Sprintlaw lawyers are New Zealand qualified lawyers and they do not currently hold a New Zealand practising certificate.
They provide legal services working remotely from Australia via our 'legal consultancy' model, through which (under section 6 and section 35 of the New Zealand Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006) our Australian legal team are permitted to provide legal services to New Zealand businesses provided they do not provide services in certain 'reserved' areas of law. You can read our FAQ page to learn a bit more about our 'legal consultancy' model.
Given the strong similarities between Australian and New Zealand law, and the areas of law in which we practice (being small business and startup law), we do not view the fact that our lawyers have not qualified in New Zealand as having any substantive impact on the quality of our service. We are committed to ensuring that we provide high quality, affordable legal services to all our New Zealand clients.
Our legal team have all trained at leading firms, but have left the traditional corporate law world to join us on our mission to create a new and better way of delivering legal services. They have specialist expertise in technology law, intellectual property law, contract drafting and review, corporate law and commercial law.
