Frequently asked questions
Unsure about how we work? We have gathered the most common questions for your convenience.
The process usually begins with identifying the licence or approval pathway that appears to fit your business activity, then checking what information and supporting material are likely to be needed. From there, we review or help draft the application documents, flag legal issues that may affect the wording, and help you respond to follow-up questions within scope if the regulator asks for clarification. This is different from a high-level compliance review because the work is centred on the application steps, paperwork and sequencing for the matter at hand.
That depends on the type of licence, but common inputs include details about your business activities, ownership or control structure, premises or operating model, key personnel, and any existing policies, contracts, qualifications or supporting records relevant to the application. If the application touches privacy or information handling issues, the right drafting and advice can depend on For Licensing Application Support Pack, the wording should follow your real information flows. For Licensing Application Support Pack, collection points and disclosure practices shape the drafting. information in practice. Incomplete or inconsistent source information is a common reason applications become harder to finalise.
No. Approval depends on the relevant regulator or authority, and third-party decisions sit outside Sprintlaw's control. We can help improve the quality of the legal work going into the application, identify gaps in the material you provide, and respond to regulator questions within the agreed scope, but we cannot promise approval or a particular timeframe. Regulator requirements can also vary, so the same type of business may face different practical issues depending on the licence involved and the factual circumstances behind the application.
Applications are often delayed because supporting documents are missing, the business structure is still changing, the form does not match the underlying operating model, or the regulator asks questions that require further evidence. Sometimes the order of steps matters, especially where one document depends on another being settled first. We help you work through those legal sequencing issues as part of the application support. Timeframes can differ for Licensing Application Support Pack depending on the authority involved, so the fixed-fee covers the stated legal work rather than any promise completion date.
Often, yes. A form may look straightforward, but the legal position can depend heavily on what the business actually does day to day. For example, the way services are delivered, who performs them, how records are kept, and how information is handled can all affect how the application should be framed. That is why this service is not limited to form-filling. We look at the practical context behind the application so the documents better reflect the real operating model rather than a simplified description.

We operate completely online, which means we can help you wherever you are in New Zealand. We have office spaces in Sydney, and in Melbourne, but our use of technology allows our team members to work remotely from around the world. Our legal team are mostly based in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. We also have a London office for Sprintlaw UK.
Our legal team is made up of experienced lawyers, who are specialists in various areas of law and hold an Australian legal practising certificate. None of our Sprintlaw lawyers are New Zealand qualified lawyers and they do not currently hold a New Zealand practising certificate.
They provide legal services working remotely from Australia via our 'legal consultancy' model, through which (under section 6 and section 35 of the New Zealand Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006) our Australian legal team are permitted to provide legal services to New Zealand businesses provided they do not provide services in certain 'reserved' areas of law. You can read our FAQ page to learn a bit more about our 'legal consultancy' model.
Given the strong similarities between Australian and New Zealand law, and the areas of law in which we practice (being small business and startup law), we do not view the fact that our lawyers have not qualified in New Zealand as having any substantive impact on the quality of our service. We are committed to ensuring that we provide high quality, affordable legal services to all our New Zealand clients.
Our legal team have all trained at leading firms, but have left the traditional corporate law world to join us on our mission to create a new and better way of delivering legal services. They have specialist expertise in technology law, intellectual property law, contract drafting and review, corporate law and commercial law.
