FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Unsure about how we work? We have gathered the most common questions for your convenience.

It can help identify legal issues before they become a stock, customer or distribution problem. Importers often rely on supplier materials, overseas labels or generic product documents that do not line up neatly with New Zealand expectations. A review can highlight gaps in warnings, instructions, product descriptions, packaging statements or supporting documents before the goods are promoted or sold. That early check is especially useful where relabelling, revised documentation or extra advice may be needed before launch rather than after a complaint or supply interruption.

That depends on the product category and the materials available, but the review commonly considers labelling content, warnings, instructions for use, packaging claims, supplier documents, and whether there are obvious sector-specific compliance issues affecting sale in New Zealand. For some products, customer-facing statements and online listings also matter because the legal risk is shaped by the overall presentation, not just the physical label. We focus on the legal review of the materials and issues within scope, rather than technical product testing or engineering assessment.

The review depends on the type of goods, where they come from, how they will be sold, what documents already exist, and whether the product is being imported under another manufacturer's branding or your own. It can also turn on the factual context, including whether you are selling direct to consumers, through distributors, or with modified packaging or instructions. If the product involves apps, connected services or customer accounts, information handling practices may also affect the legal analysis alongside the product documents themselves.

Sometimes those materials are a useful starting point, but they are not always enough on their own. Overseas supplier documents may reflect another market's requirements, use different terminology, or leave out warnings and disclosures that matter in New Zealand. Generic templates can also miss issues tied to the actual product, packaging format or sales channel. A legal review helps test whether the documents you have are fit for the way the goods will actually be imported, described, marketed and supplied here.

If issues are identified, we set them out in written feedback with recommended next steps. Depending on the product, that may involve revising labels, updating instructions, changing packaging statements, checking supplier support material, or obtaining further specialist input. In some cases, the next step is not more wording but technical or operational work outside the legal review. The fixed-fee covers the review and advice described on this page. It does not include remediation work, technical implementation, certification processes or representation in disputes.
