FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Unsure about how we work? We have gathered the most common questions for your convenience.
This service is often a good fit for founders who are close to launch and need more than one legal document sorted at the same time. That can include startups opening a private beta, running a pilot with early customers, bringing on a contractor or first employee, or preparing for investor conversations where basic legal housekeeping matters. It is especially useful when the business has moved beyond idea stage but is not yet ready for a larger ongoing legal retainer. The goal is to cover the common launch-stage pressure points in one service.
The recurring issues are usually practical rather than abstract. Founders often need clarity on who owns the IP, what happens if co-founders part ways, what users are agreeing to when they access an unfinished product, and how personal information is handled through the website or platform. Early hiring also raises questions about whether someone should be engaged as an employee or contractor. The best approach depends on how the parties work together, what has already been agreed and where the main risks sit, especially where roles, ownership and data practices are still evolving.
The service includes the core launch-stage documents listed on the page, typically covering a founders agreement, privacy policy, website terms, a pilot customer or beta tester contract template, and an employment or contractor agreement for an early team member. It also includes a consultation with a lawyer to help prioritise what should be used first and where the main gaps are. This is broader support than a single document service, but it is still centred on launch preparation rather than every legal issue your startup may face over time.
The difference is breadth. A narrower service might deal with only privacy terms, only a pilot agreement or only one hiring document. This beta launch service is intended for founders who need several launch-stage pieces working together before they put a product in front of users. That matters because the documents often overlap. For example, the way you collect, use and share information may affect both your privacy wording and your pilot or tester terms. Looking at those pieces together is often more practical than handling them one by one.
Many founders use this service as a launch-stage starting point, then come back for more specific work as the business develops. The next steps might include customer contracts, capital raising documents, contractor conversions, IP assignments, or a fuller review of privacy and platform terms once the product and user base become more settled. This service Your lawyer will explain the practical position and your options in plain English. As the business changes, the legal work usually needs to change with the factual context as well.

We operate completely online, which means we can help you wherever you are in New Zealand. We have office spaces in Sydney, and in Melbourne, but our use of technology allows our team members to work remotely from around the world. Our legal team are mostly based in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. We also have a London office for Sprintlaw UK.
Our legal team is made up of experienced lawyers, who are specialists in various areas of law and hold an Australian legal practising certificate. None of our Sprintlaw lawyers are New Zealand qualified lawyers and they do not currently hold a New Zealand practising certificate.
They provide legal services working remotely from Australia via our 'legal consultancy' model, through which (under section 6 and section 35 of the New Zealand Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006) our Australian legal team are permitted to provide legal services to New Zealand businesses provided they do not provide services in certain 'reserved' areas of law. You can read our FAQ page to learn a bit more about our 'legal consultancy' model.
Given the strong similarities between Australian and New Zealand law, and the areas of law in which we practice (being small business and startup law), we do not view the fact that our lawyers have not qualified in New Zealand as having any substantive impact on the quality of our service. We are committed to ensuring that we provide high quality, affordable legal services to all our New Zealand clients.
Our legal team have all trained at leading firms, but have left the traditional corporate law world to join us on our mission to create a new and better way of delivering legal services. They have specialist expertise in technology law, intellectual property law, contract drafting and review, corporate law and commercial law.
