The ‘consumer guarantees’ are the automatic guarantees consumers get when they buy goods and services from small businesses. They are set out in the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993. You might have also heard references to the Fair Trading Act, which also protects consumers from unfair advertising and misleading conduct.

Under the Consumer Guarantees Act, consumers of goods or services are given a basic set of rights and a legal basis to seek compensation for anything that does not meet the consumer guarantees. These consumer guarantees are designed to protect the consumer, to ensure that certain minimum requirements are met when consumers purchase goods or services from small businesses.
